The Value of Expos (1970)

In this typewritten text for a speech on Expo 70 (pdf), Robin Boyd highlights the superficiality of modern-day Expos, likening them to fast food and television. Boyd argues that the ever-increasing pursuit of novelty in Expo pavilions marks a turn away from the ostensible role of expos as “serious international displays of progress and development - sort of cultural Olympic Games”. He also laments the waste involved in constructing buildings from materials that could last centuries, given they will be demolished after six months - presenting a challenge for the architectural profession.
