A Guide to Japanese Architecture (1971)
This guidebook, aimed at an architectural audience, presents black and white photos, drawings and key details of over 200 Japanese buildings. The buildings featured here are mostly of the mid-20th century with an appendix dedicated to traditional architecture - the cover photo is of Kenzo Tange’s Yoyogi National Gymnasium (1964). The guide was published by Shinkenchiku-sha, whose periodical Japan Architect was a key English-language source for overseas architects following developments in Japan. This copy was gifted to Patricia Boyd by Kiyonori Kikutake in 1972 - Kikutake’s work was featured in Robin Boyd’s 1968 book New Directions in Japanese Architecture, and he maintained a correspondence with Patricia after Robin’s death, including a Season’s Greetings card sent in 1975.
